Butte Football Upends the Bear Cubs

Freshman Quarterback Amare' Cooper passed for three touchdowns, and the Roadrunner Defense limited Santa Rosa Junior College to 104 total yards, as Butte rolled to a 27-0 victory Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11) from Cowan Stadium in the National NorCal League opener.

Sophomore placekicker Lane Garner started the scoring booming a 48 yard field goal in the first quarter. Moments later, Garner nailed a second 48-yard attempt on the first play of the second quarter to give his team a 6-0 lead. The sophomore from Chico High has converted 9 of 10 field goals attempts, while nailing 26 of 26 extra point attempts.

Quarterback Cooper found Tight End Ben Wheeler along the sideline later in the second for a 4-yard TD strike. In the second half, Cooper connected with receiver DJ Horton on a 20-yard reception over the middle, then finished off the scoring with a picturesque high-arching 19-yard toss to Najee Dade in the corner of the endzone. The southpaw QB from New Orleans QB finished the afternoon with an efficient line 19 of 27 passing, amassing 160 yards in the air. On the ground, leading rusher Niall Raby rushed for 86 yards. Raby and Ben Wheeler led the Roadrunners pulling in 3 pass receptions respectively.

Freshman linebacker Javin Hudson led the Roadrunner defense with 6 tackles, while defensive back Jude Mendoza and Sophomore defensive lineman Kai Baugh chipped in with 5. Freshman defensive back Ojani Gray and sophomore lineman Hatimu Letisi recorded interceptions in preserving the shutout.

The 5-1 Roadrunners travel to American River in Sacramento on Saturday October 18th. Both teams are currently 1-0 in National NorCal League play as the Beavers defeated the Shasta College Knights 34-20 who happems to be Butte's next home oppenent on October 25th.
